Based on Allan Moore's gritty comic book of the same name, which coincidentally takes its name from the address imprinted on the letters sent by Jack the Ripper to the London Times, this undoubtedly dark, moody movie would most likely be categorized as a crime thriller instead of a horror movie. The movie will blend historical fact with fictional storytelling to take a stab at who actually was Jack The Ripper. The movie stars Johnny Depp as an investigator out to catch the killer and is directed by the Hughes Brothers, who are long time-comic book fans.

This might be the best time for this kind of movie to open. Suspense movies have faired better than most movies released around this time of year, and since this movie can be easily sold as a horror film, it is good to keep in mind that it's a decent time for a horror movie to be released. The biggest disadvantage for the film, other than the reported on-set troubles, is that it is a horror movie and will be rated R; this might be limiting its audience by not having a hip, young angle. Selling Depp will obviously be a way to try to change that, but his star power is minimal and limited to what movies he is in.

I don't think we should expect big things from this film, but it does have a chance of doing semi-decent business on opening weekend. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
