William Castle's Macabre opens. The first of Castle's gimmick films, admission to Macabre includes an insurance policy against "death by fright."

1960:

Joanne Woodward receives the first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1996:

Nathan Birnbaum, AKA George Burns, dies in Beverly Hills. He is interred with his wife, Gracie Allen.
