69/123 David Mumpower For over half the movie, I was ready to anoint this a pleasant surprise. The last twenty minutes, I wanted someone to suffer for my misery.
145/190 Max Braden There were some moments, but this went on too long. This might be an interesting double header with Inception.

No, this is not a sequel to the 1984 Emilio Estevez clunker. Repo Men is a science fiction thriller starring Jude Law. Set in the near future where people are now purchasing organs on credit, the film sounds like it has quite an interesting concept. The production was initially titled Repossession Mambo and based on a novel of the same name by author Eric Garcia, who also wrote the screenplay. However, the movie already seems to be walking a fine line between originality and copying the plot of the 2008 musical, Repo! The Genetic Opera. Perhaps, the name change can be attributed to a mambo being musically themed much like an opera and the distributor, Universal Studios, needs to distance itself as far away as possible from The Genetic Opera?

Law stars as Remy, a repo man whose body is made up almost entirely of artificial organs. When Remy fails to make payments on his artificial heart, his former partner, played by Forest Whitaker, comes to repossess the heart and the chase is on. That will give some nightmares to anyone who has had unpleasant dealings with a creditor in the past.

Directed by newcomer Miguel Sapochnik and also starring Liev Schreiber, the film looks to be a bloody, fast-paced affair that may even pose a few relevant questions to the audience in regards to the state of the current economy and the U.S. health care system. Hopefully, Repo Men will be similar in quality to Jude Law’s first mainstream Hollywood movie and science fiction classic, Gattaca. That was a brilliant film that was both highly entertaining and made a statement on the state of racism.

On a personal note, Repo Men should provide plenty of interest as it was filmed entirely in Southern Ontario where I live, so I will be looking for recognizable locations in Hamilton, Burlington, and Toronto, Ontario. (Ryan O'Neill/BOP)
