1907:
Actor and icon Marion Michael Morrison, better known to the world as John Wayne, is born in Winterset, Iowa.
2002:
The 2002 Cannes Film Festival closes. A special jury retrospectively judges twelve films from 1939, the year the first festival was originally scheduled. The Festival was not held until 1946 because of World War II. Cecil B. DeMille's Union Pacfic wins the retrospective Palm d'Or.
