On the ground in Punta Arenas, we're treated to a couple of different versions of the same story, as Rob describes how brilliant he was at getting Uchenna & Joyce's instructions away from them, apparently by the technique of being in the right place at the right time. Uchenna tells it like he stole them. Who's right? Who cares? Rob doesn't even use the directions and just asks his cab driver. It's this kind of pointless crap that gets you hated, Rob.

The teams make their way down to the beach to find the shipwreck, which contains the Detour, themed on Ferdinand Magellan. This show does get quite geeky at times. The choices for the teams here are either to find the town plaza and then find a business using a compass, or to build a signpost based on the ports of call during Magellan's trip around the world, and order and spelling counts.

Amber suggests that they try and navigate, but Rob overrules (ha! Like Amber ever gets to make a decision) because he thinks he'd be better at building things. Yes, because making a sign is like building a house. It's probably a bad sign if you're on a race that involves navigation if you deliberately avoid tasks that involve this.

The teams split up more or less evenly between the two tasks, with the teams at the sign task left to puzzle over the map of Magellan's journey. Rob comes in with the apparently arcane knowledge that he started in Spain and not in Guam (! Let's just stop and think about that for a second) which they hope will be their ace in the hole. Uchenna is thrown by this, and starts out in the middle of his journey. Meanwhile, Rob gets tripped up on the spelling of The Philippines on his sign. Admittedly, it's a difficult one, but you are essentially just copying stuff down here. It should not be that hard.

The navigation task proves to be quite a bit easier (direction: go south), and Eric & Danielle make their way to the location of the next clue quite quickly. They then must head back to the airport to get one of several charter planes, with a pretty significant three-hour gap between them. These will take them to Ushuaia, Argentina to find their next clue.

Back at the sign making task, Rob & Amber's first completed sign does not past muster, and Rob is oh so close at puzzling out his problem, though his general bullheadedness doesn't allow him the option of thinking things through. Meanwhile Uchenna & Joyce remain really wrong, and Dustin & Kandice don't have a handle on the task at all.

Danny & Oswald make it to the airport first, securing their spot on the first charter, along with Eric & Danielle. They're still a little bit too worried about Rob & Amber and their location, but being out in front is a comfortable spot to be in.

Back at the Detour, Amber vainly tries to convince Rob to give up on this task while they're still ahead of a few teams. Rob doesn't want to admit this task beat him, and he can't figure out a way to game the system, so he soldiers on, still without doublechecking his spelling (on freeze frame, he has also misspelled Celebes).

As Amber was pointing out, the second flight is just landing at this point, and these final two teams bolt out with a real sense of urgency. At the same time, Joyce figures out their team's problems, and she can spell, so bonus for them. They're the first team to successfully figure out this task, which just blows Rob's mind.
