Queen Latifah's constant barrage of woeful comedies make me root for coup d'etat and a new ruler in the field of rapper turned Roseanne wannabe. |
Re-makes are coming down the pipeline faster than BOP can keep up with them. The latest is Last Holiday, the original of which starred that Obi-Wan Kenobi guy, Alec Guinness. So, if we are looking for modern updates, the logical casting choices are Ewan McGregor and...Queen Latifah.
That's right, the rap star and recent Academy Award nominee for Best Supporting Actress is poised to take on the Guinness role from the original. She portrays a wallflower of a sales clerk who finds out she has a fatal disease. In order to make the most of the time she has left, Latifah's character cashes in her life savings and heads off on a European Vacation ("Look, kids! Big Ben, Parliament!").
While on holiday, she begins to shed her shyness and develop a wild, uninhibited streak. The other residents of the posh resort begin to take notice of her outlandish behavior. They assume that for anyone to act that carefree, they must be unconscionably wealthy. The denizens begin to hang on her every move as Latifah's character grows more and more erratic. The original film was caustic and more than a little bit embittered. It will be interesting to track how much of that spirit is carried over to the remake. (David Mumpower/BOP)
