Vanessa Redgrave’s storied career included some nice moments in 2004 and 2005 as she acted alongside daughter Joely Richardson in her controversial FX series, Nip/Tuck. Apparently wanting to keep things equal among her daughters, Redgrave has now taken the lead role in Evening, cast alongside her other daughter, Natasha Richardson.

Evening is the cinematic adaptation of the Susan Minot novel of the same name. The book and movie tell the story of a dying cancer patient, Ann Grant, who spends her final moments of life thinking back on the life she failed to lead. While her daughters come to terms with her mortality, Ann is fixated upon a man she loved in her 20s. The man, a doctor of course, was named Harris Arden, and he broke Ann’s heart when he rejected her in favor of a woman he chose to marry instead of her. Over the years, Ann has experienced marriage, divorce, motherhood, and now cancer, but it’s the memories of Harris that stay with her in her last hours of life. Meanwhile, her daughters may only look on in confusion as they piece together a back-story of their mother’s life that they had never known before.

Redgrave and her daughter are not the only notable names in the cast. Meryl Streep, Claire Danes, Toni Collette and Glenn Close are all a part of this eclectic, deep and talented group. And yes, if you were on the fence about the movie from the description, you should know for certain by now. This is the living, breathing definition of a chick flick. (David Mumpower/BOP)
