On the Big Board
|Samberg is clearly a natural in front of the camera, and there are some funny pratfalls, but the movie is a letdown from the trailer. It's notable as a send up of 80s movies, and I loved the use of
If you're anything like me, you gave up on Saturday Night Live many, many years ago. This means that you have no idea who people like Andy Samberg are. Nonetheless, this Andy Samberg has a movie that is set for release, and I'm forced to think it has a shot at being funny because it features the hilarious Isla Fisher as well as Deadwood's Ian McShane. This movie is called Hot Rod, and combines the talents of Samberg with his comedy team of Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, with whom he has previously worked on such things as a spoof of The O.C.
Samberg will play an amateur stuntman named Rod Kimble. Rod has a big, big problem in the form of his stepfather, Frank (McShane), a guy who picks on Rod, mercilessly destroys him in their weekly sparring sessions, and pokes fun at his stuntman abilities. Despite this tenuous relationship, when Rod's stepfather becomes ill, the young man becomes determined to stage a huge jump to raise money to help the man. He'll jump 15 buses in order to raise money for Frank's heart operation. Once Frank pulls through, Rod is going to kick his ass.
While it might be a bit of a tough sell, Hot Rod does have a funny premise. It probably has a better shot at success on DVD than it does in theaters, but if Paramount can come through with some good marketing that hits the high spots, it might surprise. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
