Eddie Murphy will star in the broad family comedy Daddy Day Care, from Geoff Rodkey's screenplay about a father who loses his job and opens a free-spirited daycare center with a few of his friends. As of this writing (June 12, 2002), Murphy is the only actor attached to star in the film, but he has worked with director Steve Carr previously on the sequel to Dr. Dolittle. Production is scheduled to begin in August.

Revolution Studios picked up this project in turnaround from 20th Century Fox, who allowed producer John Davis to shop the property to another studio that would be able to fast-track the film so that shooting could be completed before Murphy started work on Disney's Haunted Mansion.

With Murphy's recent inconsistent record at the box office, it's really difficult to make any kind of judgment call about Daddy Day Care's potential. As additional casting decisions are made and more is revealed about the plot, a lot of questions will be answered. One positive that can already be noted is that Murphy does seem to have more success with family films recently than other genres. Since Daddy Day Care looks to capitalize directly on that demographic, this film should be one to keep on radar. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
