1928:
Walt Disney's cartoon Steamboat Willie (starring Mickey Mouse), the first animated cartoon with synchronized sound, is released. Completed as a silent cartoon in July, it was held back, a soundtrack was created and certain scenes reworked to match the recorded sound effects and music.
1932:
Grand Hotel wins the Academy Award for Best Picture, though it was not nominated for any other awards. This distinction is unique to this day.
1980:
Heaven's Gate opens in New York City. After horrendous reviews, the movie is immediately pulled from theaters and edited down from its original three-and-one-half hour length. It is released again in Los Angeles on April 24, 1981. Heaven's Gate cost $44 million to make. The film makes $1.3 million in its theatrical run.
2000:
Michael Douglas marries Catherine Zeta-Jones.
