Lucille Ball, best-known for her long-running television hit I Love Lucy, is born in Jamestown, New York. Ball starred in many films, including the movie version of the Broadway hit Mame.

1926:

Warner Bros. releases Don Juan, its first Vitaphone release.

1932:

The inaugural Venice Film Festival opens. The Sin of Madelon Claudet is named Most Touching Film.

1959:

Famed comedy director Preston Sturges dies of a heart attack in New York, New York

2003:

Arnold Schwarzenegger announces on the Tonight Show that he will run for governor of California in a recall election against Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger ultimately wins the election on October 7.
