1922:
Judy Garland, star of The Wizard of Oz and A Star is Born, among other films, is born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was awarded a juvenile Oscar for her role as Dorothy. Garland is also the mother of Oscar winner Liza Minelli.
1982:
Rainer Werner Fassbinder dies of a drug overdose in Munich.
1992:
The inaugural MTV Movie Awards ceremony is held. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is named Best Movie.
