On the Big Board
Position Staff In Brief
5/55 Reagen Sulewski Can't live up to the raw kineticism of the first, but a satisfying conclusion to the revenge fantasy.
12/48 Les Winan Fulfills the promise of Volume 1. How would the films work watched together in one sitting? Even better?
17/92 David Mumpower Quentin Tarantino might be the only person in the world who can out-talk me.
24/126 Kim Hollis Much, much more dialogue heavy than the first film. And that's a very good thing.
95/133 Dan Krovich A letdown after Volume 1

Uma's back, and after being humiliated, betrayed and abandoned, she's ready to kick some serious ass. All we're sayin' is watch your back, Ethan.

So if you've been following this project from the beginning, you know that Kill Bill was originally intended to be one movie, but when Quentin "I haven't been sober in public since 1992" Tarantino sat down to edit it he just couldn't bear to cut his footage down to a manageable size. So in an act of either extreme faith or auteur indulgence (or perhaps because they took a look at the total box office tallies for each of the Matrix and the LOTR series to date), Miramax allowed QT to split his movie into two component parts.

The first time around, The Bride exacted her revenge against two of the members of the Deadly Viper Assasin Squad, so (counting on fingers) she now has three left -- Elle Driver, Budd, and the big conquest, Bill. Matters do get complicated a bit when our heroine discovers that her daughter, previously presumed killed in the wedding bloodbath, is actually still alive.

While Vol. 1 was an homage to the chop-socky grindhouse films of the '70s, the second half will more closely align with the Italian Spaghetti Western genre. What does this mean? Blood. Gallons of blood.

Although the original plan was to have the second movie be released some time in December 2003 (just two months after the first installment bowed in early October), the release date for Kill Bill 2 was eventually bumped to February 2004. The official party line for the new release date is that Miramax didn't want to risk having one movie cannibalize the Academy Award chances of the other. As it turns out, that question is moot, as the first film didn't receive a single nod. So instead of a February release, we're now looking at April, as the studio hopes to capitalize off a successful DVD release that will happen at around the same time.
