The Event takes centers around a series of suspicious deaths in the gay community of Manhattan’s Chelsea district. An assistant district attorney assigned to the case focuses on the most recent decedent, determined to get to the bottom of the string of suicides that appear to have been assisted. In the process of interviewing her corpse’s friends and family, the audience is presented with flashbacks of his life and death, and the mystery behind the cases that have come the ADA’s way is resolved.

The Event premiered at Sundance this year, where it received somewhat mixed reviews. Critics seem to be impressed with the performances, but found the script a touch too didactic and occasionally clichéd. The film is now set for a limited release, and while it will most likely find its niche audience, it’s doubtful it will go much outside the art-house circuit. Come award time, however, The Event could see renewed life, as some of the performances could garner nominations and honors, and the film itself will likely be seriously considered, due to its subject matter.
