I'd like a show of hands. How many of you remember the 1996 film The Adventures of Pinocchio? Not many of you. Let me refresh your memory. It starred Martin Landau as Geppetto and Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Pinocchio. It has been shown on The Wonderful World of Disney a couple times, too.

Well, they decided to make a sequel to that film. Landau is back as Geppetto, but Mr. Thomas was a little too old to reprise his role as the famous puppet that wanted to be a boy. They got the young Gabriel Thomson to take the title role. Veteran director Michael Anderson (1956's Around the World in 80 Days, Logan's Run, Orca) is at the helm.

This time around, the tables are turned. Pinocchio buys a potion from the mysterious Madame Flambeau, who is actually the evil Lorenzini (Udo Kier) in women's clothing. But this is not your run-of-the-mill potion. It turns Geppetto into a puppet! He spends the movie trying to fulfill his wish to be a "real old man" again.

This film actually wrapped production in June 1999 on a budget of $10 million. It was released on DVD in Europe on April 2, 2001, but has never seen a US theatrical release. I believe that the only reason this is getting a theatrical release of any kind is that there must be some kind of contractual obligation. If you're lucky enough to see that it's showing at a theater near you, don't wait to see it. I'm sure it'll be gone before you know it. If you don't catch it, I'm sure it'll be out on DVD soon enough. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
