This film has been around for quite a while. It was filmed back in 1999 and has already been released on DVD and video in several markets. However, since the genre of Hong Kong action films has seen growth in popularity recently, it is going to have a theatrical run in the United States.

Director Teddy Chan, along with writers Jo Ho Hui, Oi Wah Lam, and Clarence Yip, bring this story of terrorism to the silver screen. They enlist the help of actors, such as Joan Chen and Daniel Wu, to tell their tale.

Wu plays Todd, the son of Khmer Rouge terrorist Kieron. He has sworn his allegiance to his father. To aid in the cause, Todd tries to get his hands on an incredibly dangerous chemical weapon, code named Purple Storm. While taking on this task, he suffers a head injury and falls into a coma. When he awakens, he is in police custody, but the authorities decide to take advantage of his amnesia. They convince him that he is actually on their side and try to get him to infiltrate the Khmer Rouge and bring Keiron to justice.

Miramax picked up the distribution rights to this film at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. The movie has won numerous awards at both the 1999 Golden Horse Film Festival and the 2000 Hong Kong Film Awards and has received praise from critics and audiences alike. It is still unclear whether this film will be a limited release or will reach a larger audience. Hopefully, the movie studios and distributors have learned that people are enjoying the film offerings from Asia and will put some money behind these efforts. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
