A beautiful young Portuguese widow in a Massachusetts fishing village cares for her elderly mother and young daughter and mourns the loss of her husband, a fisherman, at sea. Her husband was the love of her life, and she is convinced that love and passion have left forever, except when she is singing traditional Portuguese music at a local restaurant. But as often happens, Fate has other ideas, and when a charming Brit rolls into town in a borrowed Jaguar, he proceeds to sweep her off her feet. But he hides a secret, a secret known to the woman’s young daughter, who will use it to get what she believes she wants in life. After many twists and turns, all is revealed and resolved, and those with a talent for it live happily ever after.

Passionada had its debut at the Seattle Film Festival, where it received a generally positive reaction. It is now set for a limited release on August 15, 2003. Passionada is the kind of gentle romance that can often enjoy a long run on the art-house circuit, particularly if word-of-mouth is respectable and builds interest. If the critics and early movie-goers give the film good reviews, Passionada should stick around the art-house circuit well into the fall. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
