The old saw about the hardest working person in showbiz used to sound like pointless hype to me. Tyler Perry has forced me to reconsider my position. The actor/writer has triumphed at Hollywood to the point where he has turned his own name into a brand.

Perry’s movies have earned over half a billion dollars in world-wide revenue. And there is a key difference between when I say “his movies” in this instance versus most. Tom Hanks’ movies are not the ideas of Hanks formulated into features. Perry claims ownership of his titles in a way that ordinarily only qualifies for Woody Allen. The results speak for themselves.

In 2012, Perry will release two titles, one of which will include the return of Madea. Good Deeds is the other one. Given that Mr. Perry is now one of the most powerful people in the industry, he might as well enjoy it some. This is the film where he does. Perry portrays a successful businessman who is engaged to Gabrielle Union. You can dream it. Tyler Perry can write a movie that makes it happen.

Since their characters are together at the start of the movie, Union and Perry are probably not going to wind up together. In fact, Perry’s character, Wesley Deeds, has a run-in with a down-on-her-luck mother named Lindsey who happens to look a lot like Thandie Newton. After having her car towed, Deeds realizes that he may have accidentally caused her and her young daughter to lose their home. Then, the two of them fall in love. Hey, do your romantic fantasies all make perfect sense? No? Then, stop being so judgmental. (David Mumpower/BOP)
