Yvan Attal wrote, directed and stars in this French film, which is loosely based on his own personal relationship with co-star and real-world wife Charlotte Gainsbourg. Attal plays Yvan, a struggling sports writer who is married to a rather famous actress named Charlotte. Though the couple tries to live a normal life, her fame makes things tough. Autograph hunters interrupt their dinners, police let them off with warnings for traffic violations, and impossible-to-obtain restaurant reservations come with easeā€¦as long as Charlotte is the one making the call. Yvan's male ego is ever-so-slightly challenged, but he deals with it. That is, he does until a man sitting next to him at a bar asks him if he gets jealous watching his wife make love to her co-star onscreen.

Yvan grows ever more insecure as Charlotte goes to London to shoot a new film. Her co-star, John (played by The Limey himself, Terence Stamp), is between relationships, and as her husband's suspicion and jealousy makes itself more and more apparent, Charlotte begins to doubt their marriage and grows closer to the handsome Brit. Meanwhile, Yvan is taking acting classes back in Paris, and draws the attention of a pretty blonde.

My Wife is an Actress had its premiere in September, 2001 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for North American distribution. It has received some outstanding reviews thus far, but the fact that the film is subtitled probably prohibits it from being released beyond a few limited venues. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
