Gosford Park is the country home of Sir William McCordle and his wife Lady Sylvia McCordle where these two higher members of society have gathered some of their friends and their valets for a weekend shooting party, which mysteriously becomes the scene of a murder or two. This film by Robert Altman was shot entirely in the UK and features some premiere names of English cinema. Kristin Scott Thomas, most famous for her Academy Award-nominated role in The English Patient, stars as Lady Sylvia McCordle. Sir Derek Jacobi, most famous for I, Claudius, also stars as Probert (a valet) while other notable, if not more recognizable, names include Clive Owen and Ryan Phillipe.

This picture is Altman's follow-up to Dr. T and the Women, a film that was not very well-received by critics or the public. While most of Altman's films remain low-key and receive only limited runs in theatres, most are very well-received by critics who love his style of wit and ability to inject some down-to-earth humor into less than humorous situations while never taking the subject too lightly. This movie has an Agatha Christie feel to it but will also mesh a self-aware, wry humor inherently found in British comedies. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
