In the 1860s, silk merchant Herve Joncour travels to the still isolated country of Japan in search of silk worms that remain undamaged by an epidemic affecting the silk supply in Europe.

During his several trips, he encounters the concubine of his host, a local baron. The woman is enchanting. Vaguely European, she nonetheless never speaks to him. The only communication between the two would-be lovers is via glances and occasional notes she leaves to him in Japanese, which he cannot read.

Not until his return does he have the letters translated, at which point he begins to fully understand the depth of emotion possible. Upon returning to Japan he continues to encounter the mysterious woman, while his wife grows more suspicious.

Based on the book by Alessandro Baricco, Silk is directed by Francois Girard. According to some reviews, the movie faithfully adapts the story in a lush, soft and sensual manner reminiscent of the fabric.

The movie stars Michael Pitt as the silk merchant and Keira Knightly as his faithful wife, as well as Alfred Molina. (D. James Ruccio/BOP)
