On the Big Board
Position Staff In Brief
16/94 Shane Jenkins Someday, we'll be angry with this movie for ushering in a whole new style that we'll be thoroughly sick of. But for now, it (along with Batman Begins) is the best of the comic book adaptations.
21/46 Les Winan Ridiculous yet awesome, it's mostly ridiculously awesome. Visually incredible.
33/50 Michael Bentley Visually exciting, but the plot is so thin it could have been a 15-minute short story.
33/33 John Seal Laugh out loud dreadful
41/214 Max Braden Mostly accomplished what it intended (pure testosterone), but I saw Scots and Samurai where I should have been seeing Greeks and Persians. Some great fight scene choreography.

The Battle of Thermopylae is arguably one of the most critical moments in history. Nothing short of the origins of western political thought were at stake as the various Greek city states began to unify under nascent ideals modernity would later call Democracy.

Taken from the graphic novel written by Frank Miller (Sin City), 300 is the retelling of the story of King Leonidas of Sparta who, under threat of invasion by Persia, the most powerful empire of the age, mobilized a small, elite force of 300 troops (and their allies) to the Pass of Thermopylae. Knowing that they stood little chance of survival, the small number of Greeks nonetheless withstood the onslaught of a vastly numerically superior force (rumored to be 50,000 to a million strong) for several days and then died to the last man.

Legend tells that their sacrifices inspired all of Greece to rally and defeat the Persian invasion.

300 also boasts one of the most visually sumptuous trailers since Pearl Harbor. Featuring the best Nine Inch Nails song that few know, “Just Like You Imagined”, as its musical companion, it packs money shot after money shot. Whoever took my idea to use that song in a trailer…Good Job, Sir! (D. James Ruccio/BOP)
