When war suddenly explodes during the lazy summer of 1914, millions of people are both affected and taken aback. Merry Christmas will examine the intersecting lives of numerous characters during this time frame.

Nikolaus Sprink is an extraordinarily talented tenor who performs at the Opera House in Berlin. Because of the war, he'll be giving up both his lucrative career and the woman he loves - Anna Sorensen, a soprano and his singing partner. Meanwhile, in another portion of the world, an Anglican priest named Palmer has volunteered to follow his young aide, Jonathan. They depart their beloved Scotland, with one planning to serve as a soldier, the other to aid the military by carrying stretchers. Finally, Lieutenant Audebert had to leave behind his pregnant wife who has been ordered to rest in bed. He has had no news of her condition, even though the time frame seems right for her to have given birth.

Christmas arrives with the requisite snow and presents from both families and the army. Those packages aren't the big surprise. That night, the men of the German, French and Scots armies will lay down their arms to travel across the trenches. They'll encounter the men who are supposed to be their enemies and celebrate the holiday together. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
