For some reason, stylistic action films, especially those about fictitious monsters, seem to appeal to American moviegoers’ taste for violence. Just look at the successes of movies such as Van Helsing, A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Underworld.

Yes, the story revolves around a young teenage boy (Matthew Knight) who discovers that he is a half-blooded werewolf. Yes, unbeknownst to him, his extended family has secretly been protecting him and his powers his whole life from another group of werewolves that want to rid him from the species. And yes, his family and his mother (Rhona Mitra) must now fight to keep him, and their linage, alive.

Still, special effects artist Stan Winston was quick to insist at the July 2006 Comi-con convention that "this is not Underworld." However, the film’s futuristic gothic elements (think Waterworld) and supernatural creatures say otherwise.

This is the first time Lionsgate Entertainment has worked with Constantin Films, which also released Resident Evil and Wrong Turn. Along with Winston, whose work is featured in the Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park, Terminator, and Batman series, Skinwalkers should at least be a visual treat if not an intellectually stimulating one.
