Katie (Mika Boorem) is a teenage girl who is coming of age in Malibu, California. She lives a very privileged life, but contends with the same issues that are commonplace to all girls her age. Katie is dealing with parental conflict, her own sexuality, her boyfriends, and the very essence of growing up.

Meanwhile, halfway around the world in rural China, Lin (Yi Ding), a girl born on the same day as Katie, lives a very different life. Due to a severe facial deformity, she lives in both fear and embarrassment. Her father has dedicated his life to Lin with the hope that her circumstances may one day change, which finally comes to them in the form of the worldwide "Doctor's Gift" program. Katie has volunteered for this program, and journeys to China.

Once Katie arrives and begins to involve herself in the work there, she finds herself taking off on her own to try to find Lin. Will she be able to bring a smile to Lin's face? (Kim Hollis/BOP)
