Zhou Yu is a painter at a ceramic factory in the northwestern Chinese town of Sanming, and she is in love with a shy, sensitive poet named Chen Qing. An idealistic dreamer, Chen Qing works at a library in Zhongyang, which means that Zhou Yu must travel by train to see him every weekend. Their encounters are wildly passionate, as they spend their time together making love to satiate Zhou Yu's insatiable longings. In the afterglow of love, the couple always ends the weekend with a bowl of sweet tofu soup from a peddler on the street. They are deliriously happy, and when she is away from her lover, Zhou Yu expends all her energy toward raising money and making contacts in an effort to get Chen Qing's poetry published.

Suddenly, that amorous affair is endangered when Zhou Yu meets a man while on one of her train journeys. Zhang Jiang is a cynical veterinarian who travels from home to home making house calls on his patients. His hedonistic nature proves impossible to resist and she begins a torrid affair with Zhang Jiang. This leads her both to another train station and an ever increasing level of lust and voraciousness. Eventually, a chance meeting will have a pronounced affect on the destiny of all three people involved in the triangle.

The primary role of Zhou Yu is played by Chinese film star Gong Li, who is possibly best known in North America for Farewell My Concubine. The incomparable Tony Leung is Chen Qing, which means that we have a beautiful cast here indeed. Li Zhixiong (The Road Home) plays the veterinarian. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
