One of the most cerebral cinematic mechanisms is to offset the maturation process of two family members against one another. Since the presumption exists that the two have similar backgrounds and experiences, contrasting the growth pattern of each once they are separated can offer fascinating societal insights when done well.

In the case of The Ape, this base is exactly what will be used to show the dramatic sociological differences between two men raised in the same environment. Both are brilliant minds with the capacity to accomplish whatever they want. One will choose the path of intellectual growth by working to become a doctor. The other celebrates a lifestyle of hedonism.

The difference between this sociological study in theatrical form and other films in the same vein is that in The Ape, both men wind up fighting the same demons. The inescapable nature of their similar fates is the cynical basis of the project by first time director James Franco (Spider-Man 2). He also plays the titular character from the script he co-wrote with friend Merriwether Williams.

Actor/writer/director is a nice way to follow up Spidey, wouldn't you say? (David Mumpower/BOP)
