Joshua Marston makes his directorial and writing debut with this powerful film about the strong desire to make your life better and help your family. The actors are very convincing in their roles and bring realism to this movie.

The story is about a 17-year-old girl named Maria (Catalina Sandino Moreno), who lives in a tiny village in Colombia. She has a job taking thorns off of locally grown roses. She really has to keep this job because her family, including a grandmother, mother, sister, and nephew, depend on her income to survive. She finally has enough when her boss won’t let her go to the bathroom when she feels sick. Maria ends up vomiting on the roses and has to clean them up before continuing her work.

She quits but realizes she has to bring in money to keep her family alive and well. Enter Lucy (Guilied Lopez). She’s been around the block a few times and has a suggestion to get some quick cash. Her employer, Franklin (John Alex Toro), needs more “mules” to transport heroin to New York. Maria takes the job and heads off on her dangerous journey.
