Tupac Shakur, felled by gunfire at the far-too-early age of 25, has seen nearly as prolific an artistic output since his tragic demise as he did whilst still on this plane of existence. In fact, Shakur’s output rivals only that of Elvis Presley for the release of material since shuffling off this mortal coil. But Tupac has one up on the King of Rock and Roll, with no less than nine films being released since his death in 1996 that feature him as either main focus or primary influence on the rap music scene.

And now comes Tupac: Resurrection, the first authorized film biography of the slain rap star. Through the use of archival footage, home movies and photographs, Tupac: Resurrection takes a look at the artist’s short life, his career, and his lasting influence on the world of music. The film will also feature excerpts of his poetry, and from journals and personal letters. There will also be the first official biography of Tupac released in conjunction with the film, and, of course, a soundtrack album, purportedly containing more unreleased material from the archives.

Tupac: Resurrection premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, and will be receiving a somewhat wide release beginning November 14th. One suspects that Paramount is looking towards the awards season by releasing the documentary late in the year, and certainly there will be some interest in seeing how the authorized documentary covers some of the more incendiary aspects of the late rapper’s life and death. It will also be intriguing to see how this film dovetails with the upcoming Biggie and Tupac, which will reportedly focus more on the murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls, another rap pioneer, and the still-ongoing investigations in which some contend the police are dragging their feet. Tupac: Resurrection promises an intimate look at a life and a talent cut short by the violence inherent in the lifestyle about which the artist so vividly wrote. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
