Inspired by the LEGO "Bionicle" robot toys, Miramax plans to have this CGI film hit theaters at some point in either 2005 or 2006. Following up the direct-to-video releases Bionicle: Mask of Light as well as an additional video release that is scheduled to hit shelves in fall of 2004, the studio is looking to build a kiddie franchise of sorts.

The toys are part of an extremely successful line that includes comic books, video games and trading cards. The Bionicle theatrical release will focus on the adventures of six robotic heroes known as the Toa. They join together to collect ancient artifacts known as the Masks of Power (sounds a lot like the current season of Jackie Chan Adventures) so that they may defeat the evil ruler Makuta, who has taken over the island of Mata Nui.

The first DVD title (Mast of Light) was produced by Creative Capers Entertainment on a slight budget of $5.2 million. It didn't really jump off the shelves in its debut, so the studio will need to hope for a slowly building word-of-mouth type of audience to drive this movie's potential for financial success.
