This is not a TV-to-movie adaptation of the ‘70s television hit, but rather an English-language version of the popular French film. The original, which was released in 1998, was directed by Gerard Pires and written by Luc Besson. Barbershop director Tim Story is helming the American version, while a host of talent had their hands in the screenplay.

The increasingly popular Queen Latifah plays Belle, a single mom who makes her living as a pizza delivery driver. She always hears compliments about how fast her deliveries are and decides to earn even more money by driving a cab. She quickly gets famous for her driving exploits, including speeding down streets at over 100 miles per hour.

Detective Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) thinks he can use Belle’s driving skills to his advantage. He enlists Belle’s aid in catching a gang of beautiful female bank robbers. He knows that the combination of his brains and her driving prowess will be an unstoppable crime-fighting force.

Ice Cube was originally scheduled to star in this feature, but dropped out. The script was rewritten to accommodate the rising star of Latifah. Filming was originally planned for Spring 2002, but was pushed back when Ice Cube left. The film was shot from mid-September to late-November 2003 and is scheduled for release October 8, 2004.
