Disney/Touchstone is putting out an original movie rather than remaking one of their classics. The film is based on the popular young adult novel of the same name by Dylan Sheldon.

Bright new actress Lindsay Lohan of Freaky Friday and The Parent Trap stars as Mary Elizabeth “Lola” Cep. She is used to being the most popular girl at her school in Greenwich Village, but now she’s moving to a New Jersey suburb. Carla Santini (Megan Fox) claims that title at the Lola’s new school. Lola is determined to regain her “rightful” place once again.

Lola’s plan is quite involved. First, she is planning on winning the lead role in the school’s theatrical production of Pygmalion. Carla feels threatened and fights back by getting tickets to the sold-out farewell concert by Lola’s favorite band. Not to be outdone, Lola tries to sneak into the concert and meet the band’s lead singer (Adam Garcia). Who will finish first in this race to the top?

When I first read the premise for this, I thought it would be good for another Disney actress, Hillary Duff. In fact, before her split with Disney, the studio had brought the film in from turnaround at New Line with just that intention. Instead, they were pleased with Lohan’s performances and gave her the role. Production took place during the summer of 2003 with a planned 2004 release. I’m sure will see this one sometime during the summer months of 2004. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
