The life of a fledgling rock star is hard.

That's the basic message of Prey for Rock & Roll, a semi-autobiographical look at the trials and tribulations of an all-girl band trying to make it big on the LA club scene of the late '80s. The band has been through many ups-and-downs, and far too many of the former and too few of the latter are making it increasingly difficult to keep the dream alive. When a producer finally agrees to hear them play, and promises them a contract if he likes what he hears, the lead singer decides to give it one more shot before giving up on her rock-and-roll dream for good. Of course, the path is not smooth, and personal problems threaten to destroy the band before they get their final shot. The girls must work to overcome the obstacles thrown in their path just as they seem to be on the brink of stardom and find a way to stay together.

Prey for Rock & Roll premiered at Sundance this year, and is now slated for an extremely limited - as in New York City-only - release beginning October 3, 2003. This may be the beginning of a platformed release for the film, or it may be to satisfy a contract obligation and the movie will head straight to home video after this date. Only time will tell on this, but with early reviews being decidedly mixed, Prey for Rock & Roll will need very good word-of-mouth and a lot more critical support if it is to see any theaters beyond New York. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)

As we get closer to release, the reviews have been generally positive, although most of those critics have been qualified in their praise. (And it's nice to see Gina Gershon seems to have decided to channel a R-rated version of Leather Tuscadero in her performance as the tough grrrrrrl lead singer.) (Jennifer Turnock/BOP)
