Hit-starved MGM wasted no time in greenlighting a sequel to 2002's Barbershop after it grossed $75 million on a $12 million budget.

Ice Cube returns as the shop-owning Calvin, and this time around, Queen Latifah is on hand as a stylist at the beauty shop next door who is trying to cut into Calvin's business. Not only that, but he's struggling to maintain the small business's integrity even amidst the influx of urban developers who would replace all of the local mom and pop stores with big name-brand chains.

Back on hand to lend their assistance will be some of the original shop denizens, including the hilarious Cedric the Entertainer as Eddie, Eve (Terri), Michael Ealy (Ricky), Troy Garity (Issac), and Sean Patrick Thomas (Jimmy).

Like the first film, Barbershop 2 was filmed in Chicago, so the authenticity and importance of the neighborhood remains intact. Barbershop director Tim Story was unavailable to hurry the sequel to completion according to MGM's plans, so the man who helmed How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Kevin Rodney Sullivan, took the reins in his place.

One important note of interest in regards to Barbershop 2 is that it will spawn an already-scheduled spin-off starring the aforementioned Queen Latifah. Beauty Shop is set for release in late November if all goes according to plan, with filming planned for March of 2004. And really, riding the coattails of the charming Barbershop franchise isn't a bad strategy.

Look for Barbershop 2 to expand on its original audience, especially as the first film was very well received both in theaters and in its later DVD release. (Tim Briody & Kim Hollis/BOP)
