In a film that is surely reminiscent of real-life events, Ving Rhames plays James "Iceman" Chambers, a heavyweight boxing champion who is convicted of rape and sentenced to prison. Apparently, the warden allows a limited amount of boxing to take place at the prison, and an old-time con (Peter Falk) arranges a fight between Chambers and the undisputed prison champion, played by Wesley Snipes. Master P is also featured in a supporting role.

Undisputed is directed by Walter Hill, who is probably best known as the writer/director of 48 Hours and Streets of Fire, but has most recently directed Supernova. He co-wrote the film with David Giler, with whom he had previously collaborated on Alien3 and Southern Comfort.

Miramax has just given the film a release date of November 9th, basically on the heels of MGM's decision to push Windtalkers to the summer of 2002. The marketing machine at Miramax is ever formidable; nonetheless, I would expect Undisputed to have somewhat limited appeal, particularly since early reviews make it apparent that neither Rhames nor Snipes is a sympathetic character. Once trailers hit theaters, we'll have a better indication of the film's potential quality. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
