Artisan picked up distribution rights for debut director Dylan Kidd’s Roger Dodger after it won the Best Feature Film Award at Robert DeNiro’s first annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. The competition is limited to first-time filmmakers and included such big-name jurors as Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep and Barry Levinson.

Kidd directed from his own script, which features newcomer Jesse Eisenberg (brother of Annoying Pepsi Girl Hallie Eisenberg) as a suburban teen who goes out on the town in Manhattan with his cynical and womanizing uncle, played by Campbell Scott (Singles). Uncle Roger believes he has mastered the art of seducing the ladies, so young Nick seeks him out for tips on dealing with the opposite sex. The result is a unique buddy film that sets them on a road with many wrong turns as they both mature and learn a few lessons about respect.

Roger Dodger was one of the first films to go into production in New York City after the tragedy of 9/11 and was shot entirely on location. Other very recognizable performers in the film include Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls) and Jennifer Beals (Flashdance), who joined the cast after Scott came on board as both the lead actor and executive producer. Considering that Kidd gathered all his courage to give the script to Scott when he saw him in a coffee shop, this project has come a long way from concept to completion. The film is enjoying some strong positive buzz that only looks to build in the months before its release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
