Director Claire Denis has given "all-consuming love" a whole new meaning.

The film is about scientist Shane Brown (Vincent Gallo) who has chosen to take his new bride on a honeymoon to Paris. But romance isn't the only thing he considered when he made this choice. He's also looking for Dr. Leo Semeneau (Alex Descas) who tested some drugs on him with some bad side effects. When Shane is having sex, he gets the desire to literally eat his partner.

Upon arriving in Paris, Shane discovers that the good doctor has also conducted these experiments on his own wife (Beatrice Dalle). But her condition has become so bad that the doctor is forced to keep her locked and boarded in a room.

This controversial shocker was shown at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and had its North American premiere at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival. So far, it has had mixed reviews from critics. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
