Directed by Walter Salles, who previously brought us the Academy Award-nominated Central Station, Behind the Sun is a combined Brazilian/French/Swiss production inspired by Albanian author Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April. A Portuguese film with English subtitles, it tells the story of Tonho, a young man whose father oders him to avenge the death of his older brother. If Tonho commits this crime, he knows that his life will become split into two parts, the 20 years he's lived up to now and the few days he will live before the other family avenges the death he causes. He is torn by his familial duty and obligations when a tiny travelling circus suddenly passes through the area.

Miramax is distributing the film, and as of this writing the deadline for film submissions for foreign-Oscar nominations was drawing near, but it was anticipated that they may push this one along with Amélie. If it does receive the nomination, Behind the Sun may see some life beyond its anticipated initial release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
