Pumpkin marks the directorial debut for Anthony Abrams and Adam Larson Broder, who wrote the story on which the screenplay for the 1998 release Dead Man on Campus was based. The film premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and will be distributed on a limited basis in North America by MGM/United Artists.

Christina Ricci plays Carolyn, a college senior whose sorority has set its sights on unseating the rival Tri-Omega house as Sorority of the Year. To carry out this plan, the girls try to win over the Greek council by recruiting minority pledges and undertaking a "killer" philanthropy project: They take the young male team of the Challenged Games under their wing. Carolyn is assigned to train Pumpkin (Hank Harris), a wheelchair-bound discus thrower. Though at first she is disturbed by her contact with this imperfect individual, she suddenly finds that she has feelings for the disabled boy.

This satirical comedy also stars Brenda Blethyn as Pumpkin's mother and Marissa Coughlin (Super Troopers) as the head of Carolyn's sorority. The boundary-pushing film has been receiving some slow-building buzz, and Ricci's performance in particular has been deemed stellar by a number of critics. Expect it to make the festival rounds, in addition to some art-house bookings. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
