Writer/director Nicole Holofcener brings us this comedy that takes a look at the lives of the four women of the Marks family as they face the demons of contemporary society. The strong cast brings wonderful performances to this work.

Even though they are family, the four are anything but alike. The matriarch, Jane (Brenda Blethyn), is undergoing cosmetic surgery to get back her girlish figure and boost her love life. The eldest daughter, Michelle (Catherine Keener), is a former homecoming queen who has alienated her husband and is dealing with an anger problem. Her younger sister, Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer), is timid and insecure, despite a loving husband and an acting career that is starting to take off. Finally, we have the youngest sister, Annie (Raven Goodwin), an adopted African-American eight-year-old who is trying to break the family traditions.

This film had its world premiere at the 2001 Telluride Film Festival and has been well-received by critics and audiences alike. Lions Gate Films picked up this film for distribution at the Toronto Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
