On the Big Board
|A great performance by Parker Posey, but the movie goes nowhere. (and not in a good way)
|Parker Posey has had some interesting roles this year and is unfortunately being overlooked.
Zoe Cassavetes, daughter of the Academy Award-nominated director John Cassavetes, makes her directing and writing debut with Broken English. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
In the film, Parker Posey plays Nora Wilder, a 30-something woman from New York who works at a classy downtown hotel. She puzzles over her friend Audrey's seemingly idyllic relationship, wondering what she might have to do to attain similar romance. Meanwhile, her mother (Gena Rowlands, Cassavetes' real-life mom) is happy to take every opportunity to remind Nora that she's still single. It's not for lack of trying. Nora has had plenty of terrible first dates.
When Nora meets Julien (Melvil Poupaud), a carefree Frenchman with a zest for life, she automatically assumes that their relationship will end exactly as her past ones have. She makes a concerted effort to keep from making the same mistakes she has previously, and winds up in Paris as she tries to break free from her negative patterns. Nora will have to look at her own perceptions and emotions before she can find a new outlook on life. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
