In 1910 northern Brazil in the midst of a vast expanse of barren sand dunes a caravan arrives, the leader of which believes that this will be his prosperous new homestead. He has his young pregnant wife and her mother in tow, and House of Sand tells the story of these two women as well as their new daughter/granddaughter in this remote outpost over the next 59 years. They make contact with a nearby settlement of runaway slaves and a scientific group on research mission as they look for a way out of this sandy home.

Real life mother and daughter Fernanda Montenegro (Oscar nominated actress of Central Station) and Fernanda Torres play multiple characters over the six decade story, while the director is the director of the previous Cannes award-winner Me, You, Them. The House of Sand played at the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals, and Sony Classics is hoping the dwindling audience for foreign films turn out for this entry. (Dan Krovich/BOP)
