A documentary that has played to numerous sold-out audiences on the festival circuit, Scratch explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. The film starts at the birth of hip-hop and the inspiration for break dancing and rap, then moves to the invention of "scratching" vinyl and the subsequent musical movement known as "turntablism."
A number of the world's best-known DJs are featured in the film, including Afrika Bambaataa, Yoga Frog, Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys), DJ Q-Bert, DJ Shadow and Grand Wizard Theodore, who is credited in the industry as being the "inventor of scratching." Early pioneer Herbie Hancock even makes an appearance.
Directed by Doug Pray (American Pimp) and executive produced by the Hughes brothers (From Hell), Scratch has been nominated for two fairly significant awards; the 2001 Grand Jury Prize for Documentaries at Sundance and the 2002 Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary. The film's release will be supported by a 20-city live tour by some of the DJs and other performers in the documentary. After an initial opening date in New York City, Scratch will have dates in several other cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle. Considering the outstanding reviews the film is receiving, it may see even more expansion beyond that point. Keep your eye on your local art house. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
