This Canadian film has racked up quite an impressive list of awards including Best Canadian Film at the 2000 Montreal and Toronto Film Festivals. It also won five awards, including Best Picture, at the 2001 Genies (Canadian Academy Awards).

Maƫlstrom follows a young Montreal woman, Bibi, whose life is out of control with family tensions, problems at work, and an unwanted pregnancy. To top it off, as she's driving home one rainy night, she hits a fishmonger with her car and flees the scene of the accident.

Director Denis Villeneuve throws an unusual twist in this film. Bibi's story is narrated by a series of talking fish. I know it sounds unusual, but this film has received standing ovations from audiences. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
