Well acted drama's twists are a bit too obvious and its conflicts are a bit too easily resolved. |
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is becoming one of the darlings of art house cinema. After winning an Academy Award for his screenplay for Talk to Her, he followed up that effort with the acclaimed film Bad Education. Now, he'll continue to have a presence in North America as Sony Pictures Classics will release his movie Volver.
The movie combines the classic films Mildred Pierce and Arsenic and Old Lace, and even has elements from his fourth film ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!! (What Have I Done to Deserve This?) thrown in. The movie is set in Madrid, and has as its centerpiece a family full of dysfunction.
Gloria is a No-Doze addicted cleaning lady who is stuck in a crowded apartment with her grumpy husband Antonio. He's a cab driver and forger who has a deep crush on a German singer for whom he used to chauffeur. When two alcoholic writers come up with a scheme to sell Hitler's memoirs, they ask Antonio to do the forgery of the dictator's writing. When he doesn't, they ask the German singer to get involved. Over in her crazy world, Gloria is doing unspeakable things in her own right. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
