This Swedish-language focuses on four people: Eric, a depressed young man who spends all his time in his room listening to Euro-pop as loudly as possible on headphones; his father, Rickard, an amateur porn director; Rickard’s friend Geko, narcoleptic and star of said films; and Tess, a young woman who wants to be a porn star, or a reality-TV star, whichever comes first.

A short synopsis to be sure, but describing this film is not an easy task, as it doesn’t have a plot so much as it is a voyeuristic probing of the human psyche and sexuality. The film was reportedly shot in the utmost secrecy in Sweden so that no plot details would leak out. The film debuted in September 2004 in Sweden; since then, it has appeared at various film festivals throughout Europe and in Canada, and is now scheduled for a limited release in the US. And judging form critical reaction, the film will make quite the splash on the art-house circuit, for the critical reaction has not been a very positive one. And even those reviewers that liked the film say it’s rough going, which supposedly was the reaction director Lukas Moodysson desired. Be aware that the film is in Swedish with English subtitles, and the graphic nature of the film may be a bit much for the more straight-laced. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
