Starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, and Adam Goldberg (most notable from his roles as Sol in A Beautiful Mind and Mellish in Saving Private Ryan), How to Lose a Guy is a romantic comedy loosely based on the longer titled book How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. While the book was simply an illustrated parody of those endless heaps of relationship advice books, the movie plans to expand on this concept. McConaughey will play a ladies' man who makes a bet with his best friend (Goldberg) that he can stay in a relationship with one girl for more than ten days. Hudson plays the girl in question, who consequently tries to dump him immediately, presumably using the rules from the original book.

The movie itself has had several relatively big names attached to it over the past two years or so, most notably Gwyneth Paltrow and Danny DeVito, who was set to direct the film. However, when DeVito pulled out last October, he was replaced by Donald Petrie, last seen directing the better-than-it-should-have-been Miss Congeniality. The movie finally began production in June.

This film seems to be heading in the right direction with Petrie on board, as it is somewhat hard to imagine the phrase "from the director of Death to Smoochy" fitting well into the movie's advertising. Financial success is certainly not a guarantee for this film, but given an enticing trailer, I think perhaps numbers near those of McConaughey's The Wedding Planner are possible. On the other hand, it is quite possible that this film will prove to be nothing more than typical romantic comedy fare and fall somewhere more in the range of 40 Days and 40 Nights and Someone Like You.

The movie is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2003. (Calvin Trager/BOP)
