At long last, the oft-delayed but highly-anticipated horror flick House of 1000 Corpses has found a home with a distributor and an approximate release date. Originally planned as a Universal Pictures release, that studio backed out of their deal when they saw an unfinished version of the film back in February 2001. The film was much more visceral and gory than they had expected after reading the screenplay, and the distributor returned all rights to writer/director Rob Zombie at that time. The project languished in the land of rumors and hearsay until the announcement that MGM planned to have the film in theaters just in time for Halloween 2002. Except that didn't happen. MGM abruptly dropped it, where Zombie pondered releasing it straight-to-video before Lions Gate finally picked it up.

Until this project started brewing, Zombie was best known as the lead singer of the industrial heavy-metal band White Zombie. Other than a few music videos, this will be Zombie's first time behind the camera, and he certainly looks to have taken horror to the extreme in this case. Details released on the plot have been intentionally sketchy, but the general premise involves two couples whose car breaks down near a small town of creepy characters. Any similarity to the Rocky Horror Picture Show probably ends there, as various F/X shots available at Art-F-X.com indicate that the film will be fairly gruesome (warning: this link may not be for the faint of heart).

From all appearances, House of 1000 Corpses should be a kind of bloody homage to the campy horror movies of the '70s. The cast is comprised of an eclectic bunch of individuals. Karen Black is recognizable for her performances in a number of '60s and '70s films such as Capricorn One, Nashville, The Day of the Locust, and Five Easy Pieces, for which she received an Academy Award® nomination. Horror-film veteran Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Army of Darkness) will also play a member of the strange Firefly clan. Also present are character actor Michael J. Pollard, B-movie queen Jeanne Carmen, MTV's Singled Out host Chris Hardwick, and Rainn Wilson, who played Rolling Stone's David Felton in Almost Famous.

The official site for the film does have descriptions of a number of the characters and seems to be adding new ones slowly. There's no doubt that the members of the Firefly family are a hideous and strange bunch, contributing to the buzz that has been building for the film since the trailer started showing in front of movies like Valentine back in 2001.
