Eddie Griffin takes the comedy concert film concept to a different level with this project, and the idea is indeed intriguing. Though Griffin is certainly hilarious enough that concert footage alone would be enough to draw a fairly significant audience, the movie will have some documentary footage interspersed amongst the stand-up routines, footage that is best described as "Osbournes Style."

Like most comedians, Griffin draws from his personal life for his material. The natural progression for a film of such an autobiographical nature is to go "real". In this case, the audience will see footage of Griffin’s Kansas City family, and they are an eclectic, interesting and eccentric bunch indeed. There’s Griffin himself, who was married at age 16, divorced at 17, had a son at age 18, and suffered a heart attack on the set of his television show Malcolm and Eddie at 28 years of age. Other interesting characters include his Uncle Buckey, a former pimp, and his Uncle Curtis, owner of the largest collection of pornography in Kansas City (much of which he filmed himself).

Comedy concert films are generally fairly successful, thanks to low production costs, and DysFunKtional Family looks to be no exception to this rule. Taking the unique approach of including actual footage of the family and friends who influence his routine, Griffin has created a new spin on the comedy concert movie that is sure to draw unusual attention.
