A throwback to the sweet early ‘60s romantic comedies that starred Rock Hudson and Doris Day, Down with Love is set in New York City in 1963, where Barbara Novak (Renée Zellweger) is a best-selling female advice writer. She is a strident feminist and knows all the answers until womanizing cad Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor) starts to ask the questions.

Director Peyton Reed is using a number of clever methods to further his homage to films such as Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back, and Don’t Send Me Flowers. Probably the most obvious is that Tony Randall, who appeared in all three films, will make his return to the big screen for the first time since 1993. Beyond that, the director has actually created scenes that take place in cars purely so that he can use process shots of a fake background passing behind them. He’ll also make use of the split-screen, which is one of the techniques that makes Pillow Talk so memorable.

All in all, Down with Love looks to be a sentimental romp and a unique approach to the romantic comedy. With two popular young stars and a singular level of nostalgia, the film should appeal to a wide audience and has the possibility of making a big splash at the box office . (Kim Hollis/BOP)
